Sinclair Lewis in his story used the term pretty disrespectful treatment.

He used these words to signify the behavior of Oliver’s mother.

Because Oliver's mother was very angry and yelled at them. Furthermore, she even threatened them and this was fairly aggressive done with iron from a stove.

She also laughed at them and driven them away.
