the narrator know that the man came from San Carlos which is 12 km far .He came by walking from there because attacks were taking place in his village...he left his favourite pets there & he came from there...he is 76 years old with dirty & torn clothes, broken glass speticals.. the area where he came also attacking were taking place... so because of his tiredness he sat at a pontoon bridge.. then the soldier that is the narrator came near to &asked him to move from there & then the old man told that wherever happens to him also he doesn't bother according to his fate it will go on he said .. even though he came that many km far away by walking also there is use... he also left all his fate to god.. I wrote what I know of my own because I also read that old man at the bridge lesson ....Hope this helps you

the narrator think pity on the old man because he know that nothing can call him to go away from the bridge he tried to beat but the old man thank the narrator and said him to go away so that at the last narrator went away from the bridge which a sad end
