The poet meant that the young boy believes that the ball has carried away all of his childhood memories and has been lost in the harbour much like the ball that fell into the ocean and was lost forever. This caused the realisation that, like the ball, those moments would never return.
- The above statement is from the poem ‘The Ball Poem’ written by John Berryman.
- In the poem the author refers about a young boy who lost his ball and ask what he might do next. When he had the ball, the child was excited and cheerful.
- Then the boy must have dropped his ball while playing with it by throwing it up and down.
- the poet continues that the ball must have suddenly fallen out of the boy's grasp and into the street.
- From there, it fell into the nearby river and went into the water.
