Consider an isolated barmagnet is placed in a plane. Now take a compass and place it in the same plane. Mark the direction of reflection of North pole as a point. And then move in that direction and mark the direction again. Like this move along the directions of previous ones and mark the points. Now draw a curve passing through all these points. This curve represents the magnetic lines. (If you draw it precisely and completely then you will get end at the other pole than your starting pole).

So that curve is the so called magnetic lines of force since magnetic filed and force have the same direction for an compass placed in single isolated bar magnet field.

Now come to your question. Now draw a tangent to this curve. What will you get? The direction of magnetic field! Oh God! How? Because you draw the curve taking the directions of tangents.

So basically, we draw the curve depending on direction which is basically a tangent. And after the completion of the curve, we don't mark tangents everywhere. And we mark a tangent where we need to find the direction of magnetic field.
