Land degradation refers to reduce in quality of land. This makes soil infertile for cultivation and for many other purposes.
This happens by:—
1.
Excessive use of inorganic chemical fertilisers kill friendly microbes. Not adding manure results in reduce in fertility of the soil.
2.
Deforestation results in soil erosion by wind, water, etc. Due to this, topsoil gets washed away, reducing quality of land.
3.
e-waste to some extent. This does not refer to internet waste. e-waste contains lots of precious, poisonous and heavy metals such as gold, silver, mercury, cadmium, etc. They pollute soil as well as ground water.
4.
Dumping of waste and land pollution by various industries also results in land degradation.
Land degradation can be minimised by tackling the above problems. These include afforestation, controlling the industries and their waste produced, etc.
