Early Ottoman art is often compared to Byzantine, Mamluk, and Persian traditions, with important developments in architecture, calligraphy, manuscript painting, textiles, and ceramics. Late Ottoman art (after 1600 CE), is characterized by the illustrations of various texts, produced by the court, spanning from biographies of famous people to nature, to mythological creatures and religious books.
With the economy weakening during the latter part of their rule, the sultans reduced the number of artists in court by up to 90 percent, forcing artists to seek employment from the open market. The art of calligraphy was one of the most sustained art forms.
