If the ova(egg) is not fertilised the uterus lining slowly breaks and the egg comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous. This cycle occurs every month and is called mensuration. It is also commonly referred to as periods. It lasts for about 3-5 days.

the ovum gets fertilized, the zygote gets implanted. However, if fertilization does not occur, the egg withers away and the thick cell lining of the uterus gets removed and discharges the contents through the birth canal. This process is referred to as menstruation.
