THE FOLLOWING ARE THE REASONS WHICH GAVE BIRTH TO THE CONSUMERS MOVEMENT IN INDIA :
- CUSTOMERS OR CONSUMERS WERE EXPLOITED BY THE SHOPKEEPERS OR PRODUCERS .
- PRODUCERS FOLLOWED MANY UNFAIR MEANS TO CHEAT THE CONSUMERS LIKE PRICE MORE THAN MRP , ADULTERATION OF GOODS , LESS MEASUREMENT OR WEIGHT ETC .
- SOMETIMES WHEN THE PRODUCT WAS FOUND TO BE FAULTY OR DEFECTED THEN IT WAS CONSIDERED THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONSUMER . IT WAS FELT THAT THE CONSUMER SHOULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF THIS .
- THERE WAS NO LEGAL SYSTEM TO PROTECT THE CONSUMERS AGAINST THESE TYPES OF ILLEGAL AND UNFAIR PRACTICES .
- IN INDIA , THE CONSUMER MOVEMENT ORIGINATED AS A SOCIAL FORCE WITH THE NECESSITY OF PROTECTING AND PROMOTING THE INTERESTS OF CONSUMERS AGAINST UNETHICAL TRADE PRACTICES .
- RAMPANT FOOD SHORTAGES , HOARDING , BLACK MARKETING , ADULTERATION OF FOOD AND EDIBLE OIL WERE ALSO THE REASONS BEHIND THE STARTING OF CONSUMER MOVEMENT IN INDIA .
