I am disabled.
DH is disabled.
I work with thirty-some disabled adults in my job.
I feel differently about each of these individual persons.
Me- well, I despise not being able to do something because of my disability that I feel I should be able to do. I can accept some of it, but I miss so much that I could once do so very easily. So, mixed.
DH- well, of course I love him; and, of the two of us, I’m the one who is the caretaker- which I take far more seriously than he does- which, trust me, can tick me right off. “You did what?! No wonder you’re limping so badly! I’d call you Festus again, but it appears to have lost its use….” So, mixed.
The folks I work with- well, all of them have good qualities, many are fun and clever, and it’s great when they ‘get it’, something I’m trying to teach them, some way their world got opened up; but most of them also take advantage of the rules and are some of the most manipulative people I have ever met. It’s often like herding very sneaky cats- cats who see no good reason to do what they know they should do, and instead feel it should be perfectly acceptable to do what they know they shouldn’t do- like open someone else’s lunch box and eat that person’s snack. Before anyone admonishes me that, well, they’re disabled, they may not realize it is wrong, it’s not their fault, let me interject that they hide the evidence to the best of their ability and will lie until absolutely caught, than admit what they did and apologize, so yes, they do know; they’re just used to often getting away with it because they’re disabled. That ticks me off, too. So, mixed.
