Sepals function to protect the developing flower and keep it from drying out

AgentAV: but how??
candy915: It forms the outmost layer of the flower. They fold over the tender, closed bud and protect it from cold and other injuries while it is developing. The sepals surround the petals and the reproductive organs inside the flower and protect them from harsh environmental conditions and drying out. Once the flower has bloomed, the sepal can become covered in thorns and serve the function of protecting the flower in some plants, while in others it withers or is present but no longer of use.
AgentAV: thnx
