Awadh was annexed by the British due to its great economic and political importance.
Awadh was located in the Doab, the fertile plain between the Ganges and the Yamuna rivers. Hence, it was agriculturally very prosperous and could yield a lot of revenue for the British. It also had valuable forest and grazing grounds in the foothills of the Himalayas which was economically valuable
Before 1857, Awadh was an independent Kingdom.
