It a common misconception but Hercules (Heracles in Greek) is NOT a God.
His story is the Roman version of the Greek legend- Heracles.
Heracles is one of the Heroes of Greco-Roman beliefs.
Heracles was the son of Zeus (Jupiter in the case of Hercules), who is the King of the Olympians, and Alcmene, a mortal.
Being a Demigod, he inherited god-like strength from his divine father (personally, I hate Zeus) and was a remarkable warrior.
When he was a child, he was blessed by Athena and Hera (Minerva and Juno in the Roman myths); they were tricked by Alcmene into doing so. Hera, who is the divine wife of Zeus, was jealous of Alcmene and extremely angry by her act of tricking her into blessing Heracles.( Note: Heracles literally mean "Hera's Wonder" in Greek.)
Hera took her rage upon Heracles by destroying his life.
Hera drove Heracles mad and made him kill his wife Megara and their two kids. (personal note: I don't think Hera lives up to the "Goddess of Marriage and Motherhood" title)
Then, to gain forgiveness, Heracles was forced to perform 12 impossible tasks which later came to be known as the 12 Labours of Heracles/Hercules. They included slaying of the Nemean Lion, Fetching apples from the Garden of Hesperade and slaying of the Hydra.
After Heracles shot a centaur with a poisoned arrow, the centaur tricked Heracle's second wife, Deianira into putting his blood on Heracle's shirt; thus killing him.
