The condition that will occur when green plants are placed in a dark room is described here -

We know that green plants undergoes a process known as photosynthesis. By this process, they can prepare or make their own food. For this process, sunlight is must.

But when a green plant is placed in a dark room, it will not get any light from sun. And so, it will not be able to perform the process called photosynthesis and hence will not get any energy and food.

Eventually, the leaves will turn yellow and the plant will dry up and then will die.

If a green plant is kept in dark for 3 to 4 days then it will die because of the absence of the process of photosynthesis.

EXPLANATION:

  • If a green plant is kept in complete darkness for 3 to 4 days then it will eventually die.
  • This happens because for process of photosynthesis sunlight is required and it is only in the presence of sunlight that the plant can make food for itself.
  • The plant will not die instantly because it will use up its reserve food stored in its leaf for some time, but for period as long as 3 to 4 days, all the reserved food is also used and the plant eventually dies.
  • This experiment is also used to show dependency of plants for sunlight to complete the process of photosynthesis.
