Guard cells usually keep stomata open during the day and closed at night because during the night there is no sunlight for photosynthesis. Ifthe stomata were open at night, very little gas exchange would occur, but water loss wouldstill continue.

Answer:

Guard cells regulate the opening and closing of stomata. Photosynthesis and, in turn, transpiration, would not occur which is necessary to maintain a continuous flow of water upwards from the roots to the leaves.

Explanation:

Carbon dioxide can enter and leave the plant through guard cells. Guard cells' opening and closure are controlled by stomata. The essential continuous movement of water from roots to leaves would be hampered if the cells didn't work since photosynthesis and transpiration would stop.

Hence, photosynthesis and transpiration will not occur if the guard cells don't work.
