The loss of water in form of water vapour through the aerial parts of plants on land is known as transpiration.

Transpiration is significant because ----

1. Ascent of sap is possible due to transpiration.
2. Passive water absorption from soil by roots is mainly due to transpiration during daytime.
3. It helps to get rid of the excess water from plant body.
4. It helps in the translocation of minerals to all parts of the plant.
5. It causes a cooling effect by removing heat.

If transpiration does not take place then all the mentioned things will not be possible in plants. Transpiration is one of the main causes for the survival of plants.
