When a spirogyra filament attains considerable length, the filament breaks down into smaller pieces which grow up to a mature spirogyra. This process is called fragmentation.

Fragmentation is a type of asexual reproduction occurs in spirogyra in which filament divides itself to form a new spirogyra. Moreover, spirogyra performs both sexual and asexual reproduction.
