Aluminum is a moderately reactive metal, but when mixed with hydrochloric acid it displaces hydrogen ions from the acid and forms aluminum chloride. Hydrogen ions become reduced to hydrogen gas which is released. So the airtight container gets filled up with hydrogen gas overtime.
Moreover,Yes..the protective oxide layer that forms on aluminium when the hydrochloric acid breaks down..and..then the acid reacts with the metal.
