On heating Lithium chloride (LiCl) crystals with Lithium vapour. Lithium atoms losses electron to form Li* ions. The released unpaired electrons occupy the anionic sites known as F- centres. The pink color is formed because of the excitation of these electrons when they absorb energy from visible light falling on them.
