If you add water to acid, you form an extremely concentrated solution of acidinitially. So much heat is released that the solution may boil very violently, splashing concentratedacid out of the container!

When water is added to acid then there is a sudden release of large amount of heat is evolved due to the property of ionisation which may cause splashes come out from the container and cause severe burns. This process is exothermic process because heat is also evolved.

Note: recommended to add acid to water.
