The narrator's grandmother did not like it when his grandfather brought home a new bird or animal. So he and his grandfather decided to keep Toto's presence a secret from her till she was in a particularly good mood. This is why they kept him in a little closet opening into the narrator's bedroom wall. There they tied him securely to a peg that jutted out of the wall.
A few hours later they discovered that Toto had stripped the walls of the ornamental paper that grandfather had chosen to cover the bare brick and plaster. He had wrenched the peg in the wall from its socket and had torn the narrator's school blazer that had been hanging there into shreds.
