What do you think had happened? No one can look into Don Quixote’s head nor Cervantes’. Literature isn’t like science. It isn’t about finding out all the facts. It is more like a cooperative venture between the reader and writer. What you get out of a certain book is not going to be the same as what someone else gets out of it although there will be similarities. You will get more out of it by studying the author’s life and other works, but you won’t get anything more by studying the character’s life and works because they are a figment of the author’s imagination… and yours… So let your imagination roam and answer the question yourself.
