Answer:

The secretions of the acrosome help the sperm enter into the cytoplasm of the ovum through the zona pellucida and the plasma membrane. In contact with the surface of egg covering, the acrosome releases its contained hydrolytic enzymes, also called sperm lysins. It is known as acrosomal reaction.

Explanation:

Humans internally fertilise through copulation. After a male has ejaculated, many sperms move to the upper vagina through cervix and across the uterus to meet the ovum in the fallopian tube. Around only 15% of the sperms are able to reach the fallopian tube.

Sperms go through a process of acrosome reaction. Here, as the sperm approaches the zona pellucida of the egg, the membrane surrounding the acrosome fuses with the plasma membrane of the oocyte thereby exposing the contents of the acrosome. The contents include surface antigens, various enzymes (like hyaluronidase) which are responsible for breaking the egg coating and allowing the fertilization to occur.
