If sulphur is burnt under the presence of oxygen, sulphur dioxide is formed.

  • The reaction of burning a substance in the presence of oxygen is termed as combustion.
  • Combustion of sulphur mainly yields sulphur dioxide.
  • S(s)  + O₂(g)  →  SO₂ (g)
  • Some quantities of sulphur trioxide is also produced.
  • 2S (s) + 3 O₂(g) →   2SO₃ (g)

Nature of sulphur dioxide:-

It is a colourless gaseous substance having rotten egg-like smell. It is readily soluble in water and this reaction gives sulphurous acid.
