The underlying theme of the chapter, The Portrait of A Lady' is the author's relationship with his grandmother. In this chapter he pays a glowing tribute to his spiritual and religious grandmother.
Author's grandmother had many unique qualities. Her love for animals was quite appreciable. The grandmother was a great animal lover. When she lived in village, she regularly fed the village stray dogs. She never forgot to carry stale chapatis for them when she accompanied the author to the village temple.
When she went to the city to live with her son, she started feeding sparrows. She sat in the verandah to feed the sparrows. She broke the bread into little bits, and threw them to the birds. Hundreds of sparrows collected round her chirping incessantly. A few of the birds sat on her legs, others on her shoulders. Some even sat on her head; but she never ever shooed them away.
