What happens to a battery if you use it in a circuit for a long time ?

A battery must be discharged if you use it in a circuit for a long time.

Every battery has internal resistance.

If it is open circuited for a long duration of time, the energy or voltage would dissipate in the internal circuitry.

Though the amount of the internal resistance is very less, the battery would take long time to discharge.
