If a sweet meat or bread is forgotten in a lunch box for more than three to four days they get spoilt because of the growth of moulds called bread moulds or fungi.

This bread moulds Or fungi are categorised under decomposers and occupied the last level of the food chain.

They feed on leftover or debris and decompose them.

These are usually seen as small dots on the eatables.

Bread or sweetmeats get spoiled when left forgotten in the lunch box for over 3 to 4 days.

Explanation:

  • When starchy and sugary foods like bread or sweetmeats are kept at room temperature, especially in closed boxes for over 3 days, they get spoiled and mold is formed.
  • The fungus is present in the air in the form of spores and when they land on a starchy base, it starts propagating and creating colonies.
  • This appears in the form of a white, or grey or black wispy feathery coating over the food and makes the latter unfit for human consumption.
