when stone is thrown it attains velocity as it is under influence of kinetic energy
when going up- K.E decreases
when coming down- K.E increases
while going up its against gravity so k e decreases
while coming down its in influence in gravity so increases

If stone is thrown upwards, away from surface of earth,it's speed will decrease due to gravitational pull of earth and height will increase.
So in this situation PE will increase and KE decreases.
