It depends on the type of organism. The DNA is more stable in lower organisms such as bacterial cells as they can remain metabolically silenced for millions of years through the help of their spore forming ability. On the other hand larger animals including the humans have cells fragile to harsh conditions subsequently affecting the stability of DNA inside them. When large organism die, the cellular anabolic process is halted and degradation or the catabolism is predominated that leads to cell lysis through apoptosis or necrosis, subsequently DNA is also degraded. But if the dead organism is preserved with chemical treatments (mummies) or under freezing conditions (fossils), the cells die without getting lysed and hence the DNA
