During inhalation the lungs inflate. Therefore to creates space the ribs moves upward and outward whereas thediaphragm moves downwards. During exhalation the lungs deflate. Therefore theribs moves to their original position by moving downward and inward whereas thediaphragm moves upwards.

Answer:

during inhalation, your ribs move outwards and the diaphragm stretches and moves downwards creating more space in the chest area.

during exhalation, your ribs move inward and the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards to its normal position.
