let the side of square be "a"
area =  {a}^{2}

when side is doubled
area = (2a) {}^{2}  = 4(a {}^{2} )

hence area becomes 4 times of initial one

raibaljit961: it is not right i think so that
saurabhsemalti: it is correct... just consider a square of side 1 CM.... it's area will be (1*1)cm^2=1cm^2......now when side is doubled.. that is side of square becomes 2 CM.... area will be (2*2)cm^2=4cm^2......and see 4 is 4 times 1
