the electrons are transfered to the orbitals of the respective non-metal.and the non metal gains negative charge and the metal gains positive charge because of which they are attracted by a strong force called electrostatic force.

the metallic elements donate their electron ti the non metallic elements during the formation of an ionic compound, and form ions immediately, hence the name ionic compound
