As we switch the lamp on, the pupil shrinks in order to avoid damage to cornea. As the light entering into the eyes were initially dim but as strong light (from the lamp) entered the eyes, iris changed the size of the pupil, just to protect the cornea.

when light is switched on less light enters our eyes and the pupils become smaller to avoid damaging of eyes
when we switch off the lights it gets dark and our pupils become bigger so that more light present outside or maybe the dim light would enter our eyes.
