what happens to the resistance as the conductor is made thinner?

The resistance will increase as resistance is inversely proportion to area of cross section. If we decrease the area, resistance will increase.

Resistance = R

When the conductor is made thinner [ area decreases] , resistance increases.
This is because Resistance is inversely proportional to area of cross section.
