Undigested food travels from small intestine to large intestine before it is excreted out of body from anus.

  1. The ingested food undergoes digestion by action of enzymes in mouth, stomach and small intestine.
  2. The nutrients are absorbed off by body and undigested food goes to large intestine.
  3. Large intestine has three parts:

Cecum

  • It is the first part of large intestine having finger like appendix hanging on ene end. Appendix is a well known vestigial organ with no fuction in human.

Colon

  • It follows cecum and has three regions ascending, transverse and descending.
  • The acsending and transverse regions absorb fluids and salts from undigested food.
  • The descending colon holds undigested food that needs to be excreted.
  • Colon is the place of residence of "Gut bacteria" or "Gut microbiome".
  • These bacteria prevent harmful bacteria and other pathogens to grow and depend on the undigested food.

Rectum

  • It holds the feces (stool) untill it is excreted out of body from anus.

Therfore, the undigested food travels along large intestine before it is excreted out of body as feces.
