Answer:

When the copper wire is placed in the Iron(III)chloride solution (FeCl₃), no reaction takes place as copper is less reactive than iron and cannot displace it in a reaction.

When copper rod immersed in FeCl₃ solution

Explanation:

  • Copper metal dissolved quickly in a solution of FeCl₃. The required chemical reaction is written as-

           2Fe³⁺ + Cu → 2Fe²⁺ + Cu²⁺

      or Cu(s) + 2FeCl₃(aq)  → Cu₂(aq) + 2FeCl₂(aq)

  • This happens because the reduction potential of copper E^0_{Cu^+^2/Cu} = 0.34V is less than the reduction potential of Fe i.e. E^0_{Fe^+^2/Fe} = 0.77V. That is why copper is quickly dissolved in aqueous solution of FeCl₃.
  • If we put copper metal in iron sulphate solution then copper does not dissolved in FeSO₄ solution because copper is less reactive than iron so reaction does not occur.
  • This means chloride ion also plays an very essential role.

Therefore, copper metal dissolved quickly in a solution of FeCl₃.
