Solution:
When a piece of magnesium metal is placed in copper sulphate solution then magnesium sulphate solution and copper metal are formed:
CuSO4(aq) + Mg(s) -----> MgSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
This is a displacement reaction. Magnesium is more reactive than copper. In this reaction Magnesium displaces Copper from copper sulphate solution. The blue colour of copper sulphate solution fades due to the formation of colourless solution of magnesium sulphate. That brown deposit of copper metal is formed on the magnesium piece.
