it forms sodium ethanoate and hydrogen gas

effervescence of H2 gas is observed

2Na + 2C2H5OH ---> 2C2H5ONa + H2

Rajdeep11111: its not sodium ethanoate
Rajdeep11111: sodium ethanoate is CH3COONa

When a small piece of sodium metal is dropped in ethanol, hydrogen gas evolves according to the following reaction:

2C2H5OH + 2Na ------> 2C2H5ONa + H2

C2H5ONa is sodium ethoxide.
