Aluminium reacts with nitric acid, gives Aluminium Nitrate, Nitrogen dioxide and water.

What happens when Aluminium reacts with Nitric acid.

Answer : When Aluminium reacts Nitric acid, it gives Aluminium Nitrate, Nitrogen dioxide and water.

i.e., Al + 6HNO₃ ⇒ Al(NO₃)₃ + 3NO₂ ↑ + 3H₂O

some important facts :

  • Aluminium reacts with oxygen present in air, and forms a thin protective layer around it, that's why Aluminium is not attacked by concentrate nitric acid.
  • Most of the metals do not liberate hydrogen gas react with nitric acid. because nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent. this is the reason that the Hydrogen gas produced during the reaction with metal gets oxidized to water.
  • Only Mg and Mn can produce hydrogen gas with nitric acid.
