  1. Concentrated nitric acid is a very strong oxidizing agent. It oxidizes non-metals like B, C and S to their oxides getting itself reduced to one of its oxides(NO2, NO).
  2. If the oxide of the non-metal is water soluble the corresponding acid is formed.

  • B+HNO3 + H20 — -H3BO3+NO

Reaction of boron (HNO3):

Boron usually doesn't react with acids and alkalis only in highly divided state. when it reacts with HNO3,it gives boric acid. this gives high temperature.

B + 3HNO3 -------> H3BO3 + 3NO2.
