Chlorine reacts with hot iron to form iron(III) chloride or ferric chloride. But when gaseous hydrogen chloride is passed over heated iron, the product will be iron(II) chloride or ferrous chloride and hydrogen. As chlorine is a powerful oxidising agent, it reacts with iron to form iron(III) chloride.
