Toluene is a liquid hydrocarbon that is a derivative of benzene and not soluble in water. So when chlorine is passed through the boiling toluene in the presence of direct sunlight, chlorine replaces a couple of hydrocarbon atoms to form Benzyl chloride.

The
sunlight acts as a catalyst in this organic chemical reaction to form this chloride compound, which then may further form Benzyl alcohol, if concentrated Sodium hydroxide is added to it.
