Reaction of copper with hydrocholric acid (HCl), sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄), and ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH).

Reaction in dilute conditions :

• When copper is added to a solution of dilute HCl or dilute H₂SO₄, no reaction takes place.

Cu + dil. HCl  → no reaction

Cu + dil. H₂SO₄ →  no reaction

• Copper is placed below hydrogen in the activity series, and is less reactive than hydrogen. Therefore, it cannot displace hydrogen from its solution.

Reaction in concentrated conditions :

• Copper, again, gives no reaction with concentrated HCl, but forms a blue solution of copper sulphate (CuSO₄) with concentrated H₂SO₄.

Cu + conc. HCl  → no reaction

Cu + 2 conc. H₂SO₄ →  CuSO₄ + SO₂ + 2 H₂O

• Concentrated H₂SO₄ is an oxidizing agent which oxidizes copper to copper (II) oxide and enables the reaction to proceed further.

• However, concentrated HCl is not an oxidizing agent, therefore, does not react with copper.

Reaction with ethanoic acid :

• Copper metal does not react with ethanoic acid.

Cu + CH₃COOH  →  no reaction
