what happens when dilute HCl is added to iron fillings write the reaction also what happens when dilute HCl is added to copper

  1. If you are referring to the chemical reaction below, the products are hydrogen gas and and iron(III) chloride.
  • Fe + 2HCl ------> FeCl₂ + H₂

  1. In terms of physical observations, there will be a period of rapid bubbling as the hydrogen gas escapes and a thin layer of iron(III) chloride may form.
  • In case of reactive metals like Mg, Al or even Zn, Fe , a corresponding chloride is formed evolving hydrogen in the form of bubbles.
  • Now ,I read that copper reacts with HCl in the presence of O2 forming CuCl2 & water though it can't displace H2.

  • Cu+2HCl+1/2O2--> CuCl2+H2O
