Dilute HCL is treated with acetaldehyde to give acetal. An acetal is an organic functional group having the following connectivity R2C(OR')2, where both R' groups are nothing but the organic fragments. The central carbon atom has four bonds to it, and therefore assumes tetrahedral geometry. The two R'O groups may be equivalent to each other or not with respect to each other. Acetals are formed from and convertible to carbonyl compounds (aldehydes or ketones R2C=O).It deends on pH pf the solution.
