Menstruation is a normal event occurring in women wherein there is normal vaginal bleeding and is a part of a healthy woman’s monthly cycle. A healthy woman undergoes this cycle which lasts for 28 days until she hits menopause. It occurs as it readies the body for pregnancy every month through menstruation wherein the uterus lining thickens for the embryo to get embedded once the egg is released from the ovaries. In the event of fertilization, the future fetus would rest here until childbirth. But if there is no such event, this uterus lining tears leaking through the vagina in the form of menses. This lasts for about 2-7 days. If there is no fertilization, there is a dip in the levels of progesterone and estrogen finally touching a level which signals the body to begin menstruation. Periods are a way by which women release tissues which are no longer needed.
Answer:
Every month or so, the uterus lining gets thicker to prepare for a fertilized egg if the woman becomes pregnant. If the egg doesn't get fertilized, that lining is released from the body as blood through the vagina. This monthly process is called menstruation or a period.
