Dislocations are created inside metal or non -metal when u apply force on them. Dislocations can move in metal whereas they cannot in non -metal. (Energy is neither stored nor destroyed. It can just be transferred.) So the hammer force energy received will be utilized by metal for movement of dislocations whereas in non -metal energy is utilized in the creation of new surface.
