Iodine is usually used for testing starch.
When brown iodine comes in contact with starch, it turns blue black.

Saris are usually starched to make them look good and stiff 

∴ When some drops of iodine fell on the teacher's sari, it stained the sari blue black.
∵ (because) the sari was starched.
Whereas, your socks retained their colour as the didn't have any starch content.
