When the magnesium metal burns it reacts with oxygen found in the air to form Magnesium Oxide. After it burns, it forms a white powder of the magnesium oxide. Magnesium gives up two electrons to oxygen atoms to form this powdery product. This is an exothermic reaction.

MAGNESIUM :- It is one of electro-positive element having charge of +2.

It donates two outermost electrons in order to achieve inertness or electronic configuration .

Therefore, it reacts with non-metals to form ionic compound.

Hence, Oxygen is one of the free non-metal which reacts with magnesium to form a ionic/electrovalent compound known as magnesium oxide. Its valency is also 2.

Description :-

When Magnesium ribbon is burn in presence of free air, it vigorously reacts with the oxygen which is present in air. Due to this reaction both the elements combine each other in a chemical bond to form chemical reaction leading to formation of a single product i.e.Magnesium Oxide.

Therefore magnesium should be cleaned before burning to remove protective layer of Magnesium oxide which already present there due to the reaction.

THE BALANCED CHEMICAL REACTION IS GIVEN BELOW :-

{O}_{2}(g) + {Mg}_{2} (s) \rightarrow \: 2MgO(s)
