When Metals react with water, Hydrogen gas (H₂) is given off and the respective Metal hydroxide is produced. e.g. -
2Na + 2H₂o ⇒ 2NaOH + H₂
There are variations in the reaction of metals and water. According to the Metal Reactivity Series :
- All the alkali metals react vigorously with cold water, like Li, Na, K, Ca.
- Reaction of Mg, Al, Zn, Fe with water is slow.
- Sn, Pb almost do not react with water.
- Cu, Hg, Ag, Au, Pt normally do not react with water unless certain conditions are provided for the reaction to take place.
