Nitromethane is formed when methane reacts with conc. HNO3 at high temperature.

● Explanation -
Alkanes on heating with conc. HNO3 undergo nitration reaction gives nitroalkanes.
RH + HNO3 → R-NO2 + H2O

Methane reacts with conc. HNO3 at high temperature to form nitromethane.

CH4 + conc.HNO3 + ∆ → CH3-NO2 + H2O
